About this time every year with summer winding down and coming to an end, (bawling eyes out emoji) I begin my lightening and brightening skincare routine. I’ve always battled with hyperpigmentation from acne scarring, but it wasn’t until I went to Esthetician school that I really knew how to combat it.
There are SO many products out there that promise to “even out skin tone” and “color correct your complexion” but few actually do. I promise this is not a sponsored post, no one is pulling my strings here, I’m just sharing the few products I’ve found over the years as a licensed Esthetician that actually WORK!
If you struggle with any scarring, discoloration or pigmentation issues or just want your skin to have a brighter more radiant glow, this routine is for you!
Cleanser: Clinique Acne Solutions Cleansing Bar for Face and Body. Don’t let the word acne freak you out. You totally do not have to have acne to use this facial wash. This bar of soap is packed with salicylic acid, which is a surface exfoliant that helps to break up dead skin cells and increase cell turnover, but is also gentle enough to be used everyday on normal to combination skin. The salicylic acid wash is the perfect jump start in our brightening regimen to slough away the discolored, damaged skin and prep for better absorption of serums ahead.
Serum: Image Skincare Illuma Intense Bleaching Serum On clean, dry skin evenly apply a pea size amount of this licorice and glycolic acid serum to face, neck and chest. I will even apply this serum to the tops of my shoulders, back of my hands and anywhere else the sun has left its mark. If you can only afford to get one of the products in the line up to start, spend your money here. Serums are the most potent product of any skincare routine.
Nighttime Moistiruizer: Image Skincare Illuma Intense Brightening Crème. This moisturizer hydrates and fades away sun spots while you sleep. You can use the crème day or night but both the serum and moisturizer will make you sensitive to the sun so be sure to wear a sunscreen so that you’re not working against yourself here.
Daytime Moisturizer: Prevention+ Daily Matte Moisturizer Spf 32 This is my favorite daytime moisturizer of all time. Its rich in antioxidants but lightweight in feel. The matte finish helps to control shine throughout the day and makes a great primer for foundation. If you don’t love this one for whatever reason, no offense taken BUT no brightening routine would be complete without a SPF! Just do yourself a favor and prevent future sun damage by never leaving your house without it!
