Now amidst a global pandemic, so many people are turning to the influencer space! I love it!
I’ve heard from many of you that you want to use this time to finally start your online business and start a blog. Blogging is FUN and also very lucrative. It takes consistency and tough skin to make it, but anyone can do it.
It’s not “oversaturated” and its not “too competitive” to stand out. You have a unique voice and stories to share that the world needs to hear. If you’ve been wanting to start but aren’t sure how, this is for you.
5 steps to starting your blog today
1. Identify your voice.
What’s your message. Keep it clear, simple and unique to you. Fashionista on a budget? Makeup guru? Nutrition enthusiast? Pick 1-3 things that are really important to you and share on these things often. People are drawn to authenticity, now more than ever. If you are genuinely passionate about something it will be infectious. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you can build an engaged audience when you are true to yourself and stay in your lane.
2. Build a website.
Whether you hire a developer or make it yourself, you do need a webpage. I’ve seen influencers build a following and be very successful without a webpage but I am suspicious of the longevity in that. (As in, If Instagram went away tomorrow I wonder where they would be) A webpage is the mothership and all your social channels should point your audience there. This is crucial if you want to monetize your blog and run your page like a business.
I originally built a site myself, there are so many resources online that show ya how. I learned enough HTML code to get by, but it was time consuming. I love the support a web developer provides. Websites crash and it’s always at the worst time. Your web developer will get it up and running in no time and you can focus on creating content instead of putting out fires. I found my developer on Etsy and I love that I can shoot her an email if there ever is a bug or glitch.
3. Create content.
Don’t worry if your mom and your cat are the only ones who read these first few posts. Focus on offering value in your content and your readers will come back for more, trust me! Its also helpful if you set a goal of posting X amount of times per week or month. Planning out content in advance is super helpful in accomplishing this goal. At the beginning of every month, with your audience in mind, outline a few post ideas that solve a problem for them. Ie: Mother’s Day gift guide.
Produce images for your social channels that will point to the valuable content on your blog. Get creative and think outside the box. Don’t worry about algorithms at this point, just focus on consistently producing high quality images that you are proud of.
Let people know about your blog! Especially those that would benefit most from your content. Ask friends and family to share your blog within their networks. Reposting your content on their IG or FB pages will get more eyes on your page fast. You won’t be for everyone, get comfortable with that! Remember to stay in your lane, continue to offer value and your community of readers will come.
